April 5, 2011 Florescent Light Bulbs and Mercury
The Environmental Protection Agency has posted a list of clean-up instructions, in case one of the compact fluorescent bulbs breaks and the mercury gas is released.
– Vacate the room, especially children and even pets
–Air out the room for 5-10 minutes
–Be thorough in collecting broken glass and visible powder
–Place cleanup materials in a sealable container
–Put all bulb debris and cleanup materials outdoors in a trash container or protected area
–Continue to air out the room where the bulb was broken
–Turn off the heating/air-conditioning system
The EPA is correct: mercury is a very serious toxic and you need to treat a broken fluorescent or thermometer very seriously.
The question is what do you do about the mercury that has entered your body. It is prudent to consider oral chelation to detox the mercury in your body.
